Nuclear Radiation, Children will Risk Cancer

Nuclear Radiation can contaminate the food chain in direct contact with humans, one milk cow. Children and fetuses are among the highest risk of cancer.

"The explosions created by the people exposed to radiation with long-term effects are cancer, like thyroid cancer, bone cancer, and leukemia. Children and fetuses are the most vulnerable to this risk," said Lam Ching-wan, chemical pathologist at the University of Hong Kong , as quoted by Reuters Health on Thursday (03/17/2011).

"For some people, even small amounts of radiation can increase cancer risk. The higher the radiation, the higher the risk of cancer," said Lam, a member of the American Board of Toxicologists.

Radioactive material was brought in just minutes by water droplets in the air. This material can then be directly inhaled into the lungs, and when drenched with water by artificial rain to the sea and land, could eventually contaminate the plants, marine life, and drinking water.

"Cow's milk is also very vulnerable, if cows eat grass exposed to radiation," said Lam.

Most experts agree that children who are in a period of growth and the fetus is at greatest risk of nuclear radiation. Because, their cells divide at a faster rate than adults.

"They also consume more milk than adults, which puts them at further risk," said a Japanese scientist who treated victims of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

"Cows like a vacuum cleaner, taking the radioactive iodine that landed in the meadow area. Then, the particles are highly concentrated and easy to get into the milk," he continued.

"It's like that happened in Chernobyl, Ukraine, and unfortunately, information about this risk has not been given to the parents," he explained.
