Ginger Can Overcome Muscle Pain

Daily consumption of ginger may act as a pain reliever. Nature of warm ginger is not limited to the abdomen. Therefore, a new study shows that ginger can also be a muscle pain reliever.

Ginger has been a favorite ingredient of Chinese medicine for centuries and is often used to treat stomach queasy. But until now, researchers say, has not been studied widely the benefits of ginger as a pain reliever.

Daily consumption of ginger supplements for muscle pain

The study, published in The Journal of Pain showed that daily consumption of ginger may relieve muscle pain caused by muscle injury during exercise. It is quoted from Health24, Tuesday (28/09/2010).

In two separate experiments, researchers saw the effects of two grams of raw ginger and ginger which has been processed in the form of supplements to treat muscle pain due to sports injury in 74 healthy adults. Participants perform a variety of sports designed to cause muscle pain for 11 days. Along the way, they were asked to take supplements or ginger pills.

"Consumption of raw ginger or that has been processed (in the form of supplements or pills) daily produce moderate to very significant reduction in muscle pain due to sports injuries," wrote researcher Christopher D. Black, of the department of kinesiology at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, and other research colleagues.

Ginger raw or processed?

The results showed that raw ginger and ginger preparations reduce muscle pain each up to 25 percent and 23 percent. The researchers said previous studies in animals have shown that ginger has anti-inflammatory properties, which help explain the beneficial effects of ginger to relieve sore muscles.

On the other hand, although some studies show that ginger can increase the impact of processed ginger to pain, researchers say their findings indicate processed ginger does not have much effect on the effectiveness of ginger as a pain reliever.
