This opinion was delivered by Prof. Gary A Giovino, PhD, MS, a health expert from the Department of Public Health at the University at Buffalo U.S.. According to him, there are similarities between quitting smoking with learning to ride a bike that can be equally frustrating
"Quitting smoking is like learning to ride a bike. When it fails, it should always be able to take lessons," said Prof Giovino after bringing in a panel discussion on 15th World Tobacco or Health Confecence in Singapore's Suntec Convention Center, Wednesday (03/21/2012).
For example, when it was successful for several weeks, one day could be his addiction relapse. If that happens then it should not be frustrated, because there are lessons to be learned so that subsequent attempts do not experience the same failure.
According to Prof. Giovino, primary capital to quit smoking is a decision from the heart to a complete stop. The decision was then followed by a commitment to reshape his life, including get rid of ashtrays and objects associated with smoking.
The next step is to plan for change, so there is no chance for a cigarette again. For example, if initially like to smoke when stressed, then it must begin to think about how to deal with stress without cigarettes with breathing techniques and other means.
Associated with drugs to stop smoking, Prof Giovino suggested because in addition to less expensive drugs also does not address the real issue. For some drugs may help, but it does not mean that person can not quit smoking without medication.
"Sometimes medications can help, but it would be misleading if people really expect the drug. Still have to do something, ie decide the intention to quit smoking and began to organize life," said Prof Giovino comment on the proliferation of treatment Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) lately.
